Paper 1
Paper 1 is a comparative textual analysis of one or two unseen texts. This section provides various ideas to develop the necessary skills for Paper 1. This section provides various ideas to develop the necessary skills for Paper 1.
THE BASICS:
- The Paper 1 asks students to comment on one of the two texts within one and a half hours.
- The Paper 1 asks students to compare and contrast one of two pairs of text within two hours.
- Passages for analysis may be complete pieces of writing or extracts from larger works. There is also the possibility of commenting on a visual text or an extract from a larger piece. Possible text types for analysis include: advertisements, opinion columns, brochures, extracts from memoirs, or travel writing.
- One of the texts from one of the pairs may be a literary text.
- Paper 1 counts for 25% of the final grade. It is assessed externally.

Paper 2
The Paper 2 exam consists of six essay questions, only one of which must be answered during the time period. The essay is to be written about the Part 3 literary texts. Therefore, it is a test of understanding literature in context. Although the questions will change from exam to exam, they will always focus on the connection between style, form, author, purpose and audience.
THE BASICS:
- Answer 1 of the 6 essay questions.
- Essay must answer one questions in relation to both literary texts that were studied in Part 3.
- Essay must answer one question in relation to 2 or 3 of the literary texts studied for Part 3.
- You have 2 hours to answer this essay question.
- Paper 2 grade counts for 25% of the final grade.
